Dr. Morbius' Home on Altair 4 - From the Movie Forbidden Planet

I really like sci-fi flicks and I've always wanted to live in a house that is like the neat places I see in the movies. Seeing that concept for a Mars dwelling reminded me of one of my favorite movies, Forbidden Planet. I really have a thing for Dr. Morbius' house in that film.

Now tell me you wouldn't want to live in a house like that! The depictions of modernist structures in fifties classics like this are pretty cool. It's too bad that the futurist dreams of generations past never really came true, not yet anyway. Instead of living in McMansions made of particle board we ought to all be living in places like this by now. We'll get there, someday.

Forgive me if I keep indulging my love of fifties sci-fi modernist architecture in future posts. The buildings in these old movies just have such a cool vibe to them.

Your Future House on Mars

How cool is this - a future house on Mars. Looks great, move me in! For whatever reason I've always wanted to live somewhere really remote in something that looks like it just landed. This certainly fits the bill.

You know, we can probably learn a lot about building better homes on Earth by thinking about what we would do to build on another planet. A home for Mars would have to be efficient and self-sufficient, portable and easy to erect, durable and easy to maintain, and make the most of limited space. If we can get that right for another planet we should be able to get that right for our own neighborhoods right here, right now.
